GI and Hypoglycaemia

Glycaemic Index (GI)

The Glycaemic Index (GI) may influence how quickly carbohydrate becomes available to the body following consumption.

High GI carbohydrates are broken down quickly, helping raise blood glucose levels fast. Low GI carbohydrates are broken down, helping keep blood glucose levels more stable afterwards.

That’s why treating a hypo usually involves:

A fast-acting carbohydrate to quickly bring blood glucose levels up, followed by a long-acting carbohydrate to help stop levels dropping again.

HYPO DUO

Contains two individually portioned carbohydrate sachets designed around these commonly discussed carbohydrate principles:

  • Step 1: rapidly available carbohydrate
  • Step 2: sustained carbohydrate option

Different carbohydrate choices may be suitable for different situations depending on individual preference, activity levels, and diabetes management plans.

This information has been created by Credentialed Diabetes Educators (CDEs) and Dietitians for HYPO DUO.
