Hypoglycaemia (Hypo) and Insulin Pump Use

Individual management strategies should always be discussed with your diabetes healthcare professional.

Automated / Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) pumps
If blood glucose levels are low, small amounts of fast-acting carbohydrate may be used, with levels rechecked regularly.

Because these systems automatically adjust insulin delivery, some people may find that smaller carbohydrate portions are sufficient compared with multiple daily injections. Individual needs may vary.

(For reference, HYPO DUO Step 1 provides measured portions of fast-acting carbohydrate.)

Manual mode (non-automated pump)
When blood glucose levels are low, fast-acting carbohydrate is commonly used, followed by rechecking levels after a short period.

Further carbohydrate may be required depending on individual response. Some people may also include a longer-acting carbohydrate, depending on their situation and healthcare advice.

Additional notes

  • Insulin dosing decisions should be discussed with your diabetes healthcare professional
  • Carbohydrate needs may vary with factors such as activity levels, timing, and individual response
  • For exercise or other situations, speak with your healthcare professional about strategies suited to your pump system and lifestyle
